Thomas Dybdahl--Science (2006)![]() Artist-Thomas Dybdahl
Album-Science Release Date-2006 Label-Universal Norway Genre/Style-Singer/songwriter Indie-Rock Size-83M Quality-256kbps Biography-Thomas Dybdahl (born 1979 in Sandnes, Norway) is a Norwegian musician in singer/songwriter tradition.
Thomas Dybdahl went out to become something what is called a shooting-star in Norway. As a solo artist, the former guitarist of the band Quadraphonics released his first single EP Bird in 2000. His first release did not have much success, and his second EP from 2001, John Wayne, was also unsuccessful.
Beginning with the release of his first album, ... That Great October Sound, the first part of his gold and platinum selling October series, in 2002, Thomas Dybdahl received national and even international appreciation for his unique work. Since then, and especially after the European release in 2004, Thomas Dybdahl's notability has increased significantly. The mostly positive reviews tout Dybdahl as a new pop wonder comparable to Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley and other important solo artists. He received the Spellemannprisen and the Alarm Award for his outstanding work.
The release of his next two albums Stray Dogs (European release in 2005) and One Day You'll Dance for Me, New York City further increased his standing as a respected artist.
In 2004, he teamed up with artists from the Jaga Jazzist and Bigbang on the project The National Bank, which immediately entered the Norwegian charts with the project's self-titled debut album. To date, it hasn't been released outside Norway.

Album-Burn the Maps Release Date-Feb 8, 2005 Label-Anti Genre/Style-Indie Rock Size-84M Review-The Frames have been fighting it out for 15 years, issuing albums that explode in the Czech Republic and nowhere else, go platinum in Galway but can't get noticed in the U.S.A. They should finally get their due with Burn the Maps. It's the determined Irish combo's first studio effort for Anti-, the Epitaph signature label that showcases such disparate and discerning acts as Joe Henry, the Locust, and Jolie Holland, and Glen Hansard and the lads fit in there just fine — Anti-'s an oddly shaped place, but it offers artists room to move. The same applies to the Frames' music, which on Maps swings from the barbed, railing guitar rage of the Pixies nod "Underglass" to songs where a whispering, almost self-conscious Hansard stands next to roaring chorus set pieces that bring the band's full complement of guitars and sweeping fiddle to the table. In "Fake" he delivers the bitter central question — "Come on the guy's a fake/What do you love him for?" — as both a scream and a plea, while "Happy" makes incredible use of studio mixing to put the vocals in one ear, lingering harmonies in the other, and layers of acoustic guitar, swelling strings, and even a little electric squelch under the whole bit. That's the opener, and it brings listeners into the Frames' world of raw elegance. "Ship Caught in the Bay" starts with gentle percussion and a faraway melodic lilt, but drops in stuttering treated percussion near the three-minute mark for an atmospheric effect not unlike what the Doves do so well. It's also a bridge to Burn the Maps' final portion, three lengthy tracks that essay the Dirty Three's epic sway, build from aching acoustic guitar into a sort of comforting love song ("Wake up/It's your love calling," goes "Suffer in Silence"), and drift away on swirling fiddle and tinkling piano. Sometimes it seems like the Frames are holding back on Maps. The single "Finally" is one of the record's most deliberate moments, but it could have let Colm Mac Con Lomaire's fiddle hit a little harder. And though "Dream Awake"'s slow build is standard operating procedure for the band, it doesn't really climax as much as it plateaus. These minor missteps, however, don't lessen the album's gravity. Burn the Maps is an elemental journey that tugs at the heart and sticks around in the mind — just as the Frames have been doing for years.

Album-Innocent Man Release Date-May 1, 2006 Label-Mona Genre/Style-Dance-Pop Club/Dance R&B Rap Size-75M Quality-192kbps Biography-
Mark Morrison (born May 3, 1972, in Hannover, Germany) is a British musician raised in Leicester, most famous for his hit "Return of the Mack". He is also known for his string of criminal convictions, notably a one year sentence for getting someone else to do his community service for another offence and protesting his innocence. Morrison first recorded professionally in 1995, following a three month stint in jail during which he decided to become a vocalist. His first release was "Crazy", in spring 1995; the single reached the Top 20 in the UK, with the minor hit "Let's Get Down" following in the autumn. "Return of the Mack" followed in spring 1996, and was the first single by a solo British black male artist to reach the UK number 1 slot in the 1990s. A reissue of "Crazy" hit the Top 10 in summer 1996, with further single releases "Trippin'", "Horny" and "Moan and Groan" also making the Top 10. Morrison's first album, also titled Return of the Mack, reached number 4 in the UK album charts. As a result of these works, Morrison was nominated for four Brit Awards, though he won none, but when he performed, like many of his TV appearance, he protested his innocence on stage by wearing a black top with the "Not Guilty" message.
Despite his career success, Morrison continued to be accused of various crimes, and in 1997 he was convicted of attempting to bring a stun gun onto an aircraft. He was jailed for three months for this offence in early 1997, at about the same time that the single "Return of the Mack" began its climb to the #2 slot in the US charts and later was banned from driving when he was caught driving unsupervised in his Mercedes whilst in his provisional license. In 1998, Morrison was sentenced to a year's imprisonment for violating a community service order imposed in 1995 following a nightclub brawl: he had paid a double to complete the community work while he fled to Barbados. In 2004, he was falsely accused of rape.
An attempted 2002 comeback came into trouble with the record company he was signed to at the time, Death Row UK. Mark then signed to 2Wikid records owned by footballer Kevin Campbell, but this ended fairly quickly in litigation. Mark signed for Mona Records in 2004. In 2006 Mark released a single featuring rapper DMX entitled Innocent Man, from the album "Innocent Man". As of April 16 it was at No. 46 on the UK Singles Chart. Mark's next and last single with Mona records will be released on January 29th 2007 entitled Dance 4 Me featuring Tanya Stephens. Mark will then sign a distribution deal with Universal in the United States.

Dabrye--Two/Three (2006)![]() Artist-Dabrye
Album-Two/Three Release Date-Jun 13, 2006 Label-Ghostly International Genre/Style-Left-Field Hip-Hop/Underground Rap Size-120M Quality-320kbps Biography-Dabrye is one of the aliases of Tadd Mullinix, an Ann Arbor, MI-based producer who carved a niche in the IDM community with early 2001's Winking Makes a Face (released under his own name), a twisted album that blended a sick sense of humor with genuine emotion. Later that year, Mullinix unveiled Dabrye with One/Three, the first of a three-part series that skews fractured hip-hop production. Falling into a categorical netherworld, tracks from One/Three enjoyed frequent rotation on tastemaker Gilles Peterson's BBC radio program, and "Hyped-Up Plus Tax" was eventually licensed by Motorola. Instrmntl followed on Scott Herren's (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label in 2002. Singles "The Payback" (featuring a Prefuse 73 remix) and "Game Over" (a collaboration with Jay Dee and Phat Kat) were respectively released in 2002 and 2004, and several remixes for other artists were compiled for 2005's Additional Productions, Vol. 1. Two/Three, featuring several guest MCs, followed in 2006.
Personal Rating-Recommended!
Review-During the five years that passed between One/Three and Two/Three, polymath producer Tadd Mullinix kept Dabrye active with a short release for Scott Herren's Eastern Developments label, a handful of singles for Ghostly, collaborations on Thomas Fehlmann's underheard Lowflow, and several remixes. If you heard any of these releases as they came out, Two/Three will be less of a surprise. The album is much different from One/Three in presentation, length, tone, and structure. One/Three remains the most effective and subliminally touching fusion of IDM and hip-hop, an all-instrumental affair that rides in on a cool breeze and subsides after half an hour. Two/Three's contrasts are immediate, signified in the design of its sleeve and made further apparent with each successive listen. Nearly twice as long as its predecessor, the album contains 14 tracks with a varied roster of guest MCs and six succinct instrumentals. The experience is dense and as cold as a Detroit alley on a February morning, packed with biting beats and thick atmospheric globs. It's rather claustrophobic at times, if in a deeply alluring fashion, and it can be tough to get a grip on it all in one concentrated shot. A nine-track patch, from "Jorgy" through "My Life," is where you can get an easy-to-digest fix, as it involves an extraordinarily vast array of sounds and lyricists while sacrificing neither flow nor momentum. Here's where several Detroit and Detroit-area MCs — from Platinum Pied Pipers' Waajeed (a phenom on the boards in his own right) to Invincible (who really should release a full Dabrye-produced album) — step up as if they know they're introducing themselves to a lot of new ears. On "My Life," '90s-rap nerds will get a kick, and then a reality check, from hearing half of the duo that brought them "Fat Pockets" and "Soul Clap." Fittingly closed out by the Jay Dee and Phat Kat feature "Game Over," originally released in 2003, Two/Three's always moving, almost always stimulating, never stagnating, and will hopefully be followed up sooner than 2011.

Album-Myth Takes Release Date-March 4,2007 Label-Warp Records Genre/Style-Indie Rock Size-55M Biography-
!!! (pronounced as any syllable repeated three times, chk chk chk being the most common) is an American band that formed in fall 1996 from the former bandmembers of The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers. After a successful tour together, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers decided to mix the former's disco and funk style with the latter's noisy aggressiveness, and !!! was born. The band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the mouth-clicking sounds of the Bushmen were represented as "!". In the International Phonetic Alphabet postalveolar click consonants are represented by ǃ which is not an exclamation mark but a pipe with a subscript dot. Although searching "chk chk chk" is successful in finding !!!-related sites, Spin Magazine considers it the "hardest band name to Google".
Based triply in Sacramento, California, Portland, Oregon and New York City, their debut full-length record came out in 2000 as a self-titled album on the label Gold Standard Laboratories. This was followed in 2003 by the acclaimed single "Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard", a lengthy track combining house beats with sinewy basslines, psychedelic guitars, and simple, silly lyrics which quote the title song of the musical Footloose. They are known for their cathartic live shows, and are commonly associated with the dance-punk movement. A second full-length, Louden Up Now, was released on Touch and Go in America and on Warp Records in Europe in June of 2004. In June of 2005, !!! released a new EP covering "Take Ecstasy With Me" by The Magnetic Fields, and "Get Up" by Nate Dogg. The following December, the original drummer for the band, Mikel Gius, was struck and killed by a car while riding his bike. !!! has finished their new album called "Myth Takes" and is planning an extensive world tour to promote its Feb/March 2007 release.
!!! is composed of Mario Andreoni (guitar), Dan Gorman (horns/percussion/keys), Nic Offer (vocals), Tyler Pope (guitar/various electronic devices), John Pugh (drums/vocals), Justin Van Der Volgen (bass/sound) and Allan Wilson (horns/percussion/keys). Jason Racine formerly played percussion. The band also shared membership with the similar, defunct group Out Hud (including Tyler Pope, who is also in LCD Soundsystem) which played instrumental music that was more dub-influenced and experimental.
The band supported Red Hot Chili Peppers on their 2006 UK tour.

Born in England in 1982, he has had a remarkable life. Smawfield, 24, grew up across the world, in the Carribean, Africa, Indonesia, Fiji, spending his most formative years in India. The alias, Saraswa, is said to be inspired by Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of wisdom, art, creativity and music, clearly reflective of Smawfield’s upbringing in India. Her name literally means "the one who flows", apparently influencing Saraswa’s ethos towards the flow of music and the importance of improvisation. Instrumental, ambient, emotive and expressive. 'Such a delicate, intricate sound - it's rare to find an artist whose sound makes you stop and consider the world for a moment. Beautiful.'"

Review-In the three-plus years following the release of 1997's The Fawn, the Sea and Cake's ever-busy membership dabbled in solo albums, touring with side projects, and various other responsibilities that come with the territory in the Chicago indie rock scene. But as effortlessly as an April breeze, the quartet reconvened to turn in Oui, quite possibly the finest of the group's five albums to date.
Oui brightens up the electroacoustic hybrids first heard on The Fawn with guidance from frontman Sam Prekop's Brazilian-influenced 1999 solo debut and drummer John McEntire's production work on two Stereolab albums. While the looping synths often bogged down the mediocre material on The Fawn, the electronics serve as much better complements here. Prekop turns in some of his catchiest melodies to date, while the band follows suit on the sparkling, funky pop of "All the Photos" and the wobbly, mallet-laden "The Leaf," which makes good on the soothing ballad style introduced on "Window Lights," TSAC's contribution to the 1999 McEntire-scored Reach the Rock soundtrack.
A sophisticated pop pleasure from start to finish, Oui is the aural equivalent of a perpetual Indian summer.

Album-Notes from the Underworld Release Date-Aug 29, 2006
Label-Columbia Genre/Style-Indie Pop/Indie Rock Size-72M Quality-HQ Biography-Led by Russian singer/songwriter/keyboardist Angelina Moysov, Persephone's Bees (a name that comes from a poem by Russian poet Osip Mandelstam) had its beginnings soon after Moysov moved to the United States and met guitarist Tom Ayres in 1993. The two began collaborating, drawing from Moysov's childhood influences of Russian folk, Gypsy music, her brother's collection of British and American music, new wave, and underground Russian punk. After the duo went through several unsuccessful rhythm sections, they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1999. There they made a demo and used it to recruit bassist Bart Davenport and drummer Paul Bertolino.
Personal Rating-Recommended!
Following City of Love, a self-produced LP, Persephone's Bees found themselves on bills with Cake and Jonathan Richman, while the title track was added to the soundtrack for the film Bewitched in 2005. Both Bertolino and Davenport had left the band temporarily to focus on other projects, but eventually rejoined in time for Persephone's Bees' full-length major-label debut record, Notes from the Underworld, released by Columbia Records in August 2006.
Review-Great pop music often requires great partnerships, and intriguing pop music often results from the collision of complementary but competing forms of expression. In vocalist/songwriter Angelina Moysov and guitarist Tom Ayres, the San Francisco band Persephone's Bees reveal a partnership that, on the surface, never should have worked. Moysov is a native Russian transplanted to California in 1990, who gained much influence from her Gypsy heritage, although her singing owes as much to the très moderne French and Brazilian schools. Ayres meanwhile, is a guitar freak who displays a close knowledge of power pop, alternative dance, and the heavy chordings of glam rock gods like Brian May and Mick Ronson. Together, they make Notes from the Underworld one of the best major-label debuts of the year, an everlastingly fresh parade of dynamic pop songs and cunning productions. (Producer Eric Valentine deserves much of the credit for the latter.) "City of Love," already famous thanks to a Razr phone ad, is an exercise for Moysov's coy wit and Ayres' economical licks (which range from smooth to shrieking), while Valentine delves into production textures by Wurlitzer and Theremin. The song has nearly as many twists and turns as a track from Fiery Furnaces (another band who know something about Orthodox Europe), but with an inevitable sense of energy that's been difficult to find with the B-52's entering the studio less often than they did in the '80s and '90s. "Nice Day" is another clear single, and although its breezy platitudes, the group makes it lively enough. If Moysov is the star of the first half of the record, Ayres takes over side two, beginning with the brisk "On the Earth" (whose false fade yields 30 seconds of pure bliss), and segueing smoothly to the sweet Fleetwood Mac pop of "Walk to the Moon." "Paper Plane," and "Queen's Night Out" are exquisite pieces of jagged British psychedelic pop (both of which could have slotted nicely on the '60s Brit box set, Nuggets, Vol. 2). The closer, "Home," is just as self-assured and dynamic as the ten songs before it, and coasts into the sunset with a slide-guitar coda worthy of Jeff Beck himself.

They recorded their debut album Variations on a Theme in 2004. The album was an instant success; heralded as a triumphant return by Mr. Cisneros who had not made any music publicly for many years. The underground popularity of the band lead to exclusive live engagements in London, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. OM spent the fall of 2005 recording their new album - Conference of the Birds. Comprised of two songs that build on OM’s use of cyclical rhythm, riff and vocal intonation, the duo’s new album blends metal, chant, drone, dub and psychedelia. The band’s lyrics expound upon the structure of the universe, potentiality and freedom from the physical body. Engineered by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins) and produced by the band, Conference of the Birds progresses beyond their debut, Variations On a Theme with more fully-realized songwriting and production.

Album-Post Rock Defends the Nation Release Date-Nov 7, 2006 Label-E To The Pi Music Genre/Style-Indie Rock/Shoegaze Size-55M Quality-192kbps Biography-Without support from a record label, the Bon Savants managed to create a healthy buzz around themselves and secure opening slots with such indie rock favorites as Pretty Girls Make Graves, Rogue Wave, and Editors, while self-releasing a debut record in late 2006. Led by vocalist/guitarist Thom Moran (a part-time rocket scientist at MIT), the seedling of the band began in the mid-'90s, when guitarist Kevin Haley and Moran were temporarily residing in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1997, the two were back in the United States and began recording songs inspired by science and living in Germany after the end of the Cold War. Finally by 2003 they added bassist Dave Wessel, dubbed themselves the Bon Savants (French for "good scientists"), and with rotating drummers played the Boston area. Andy Dole joined as permanent drummer in 2005. The band's debut record, Post Rock Defends the Nation, was self-released in November 2006 and mixed by Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Phantom Planet, the Flaming Lips).

Review-If Broken Social Scene had come not from Toronto, but from the brainy enclaves of Cambridge, Massachusetts (where leader Thom Moran is a research scientist at MIT), they would have sounded quite a bit like the Bon Savants. With tongue in cheek lyrics heavily informed by Moran and guitarist Kevin Haley's day jobs — the title track is about their time working in Germany after the end of the cold war, "I Am the Atom Bomb" concerns the conflicted feelings of the scientists who split the atom, and as a local in-joke, the title of "Mass Av and Broadway" namechecks the east-west boundaries of MIT itself — and a name that means "good scientists" in French, the band has the potential come off as a sort of clique-ish giggle, not unlike, say, hockey-themed pop-punks the Zambonis. However, Moran has an unexpectedly appealing voice and conversational singing style that's far removed from the angsty whine of so many contemporary indie rock singers and a perfect vehicle for his smart, funny lyrics. Similarly, the band takes the placid atmospheres and slow-building dynamics of post-rock and sharpens them into concise three-minute pop songs with prominent hooks and actual choruses. A deeply satisfying debut, Post Rock Defends the Nation proves that bands can be book-smart and musically accessible at the same time.

Sean Lennon--Friendly Fire (2006)![]() Artist-Sean Lennon
Album-Friendly Fire Release Date-Oct 3, 2006 Label-Capitol/EMI Genre/Style-Alternative Pop/Rock Twee-Pop Indie-Pop Size-70M Quality-HQ Biography-As the son of John Lennon, perhaps the most beloved Beatle, and avant-garde musician Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon was a celebrity before he had even begun his recording career. That may be the reason why he didn't choose straight-ahead pop as his musical vocation, like his half-brother Julian did. Instead, he cleverly positioned himself between pop and experimental, taking his cue from such kaleidoscopic '90s multiculturists as the Beastie Boys, Beck and Cibo Matto. To many ears, his 1998 debut album, Into the Sun, had unexpectedly eclectic roots and a laid-back vibe, earning him positive critical reviews and securing a modest place in the post-alternative hierarchy.
