"Music is the Language Of Us All!"--The Cat Empire

A person worked in Decent Xposure music company wrote a letter to me and would like introduce some artists to you through CocoaMusic. Today i'd like to recommend one of them--"The Cat Empire" and their latest albums "Cities" and "Two Shoes".

Who is The Cat Empire?

Combining a number of styles — from funk to jazz to ska — Melbourne, Australia's Cat Empire formed in 1999 as a trio. Keyboardist Oliver McGill, double bassist Ryan Monro, and percussionist Felix Riebl were eventually joined by trumpet player Harry James Angus, drummer Will Hull-Brown, and DJ Jamshid Khadiwala. A single and a live EP preceded the band's first album, The Cat Empire, which was released in 2003. At that point, they had already played the Melbourne Festival, the Adelaide Festival of Arts, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and WOMAD. Two Shoes, their second album, was recorded in Havana, Cuba and released in 2005. Cities followed a year later. Throughout the years, the band's members have been involved in numerous outside recording and performing projects.

Two Shoes

Recorded in Havana Cuba, at the famous Estudio Egrem where legends such as The Buena Vista Social Club, Irakere, Ruben Gonzalez and many others have found themselves recording. This album was made the old school way, playing live in a room over the course of 28 days in Nov/Dec 2004. Produced by Jerry Boys, Felix Riebl and The Cat Empire, it is an album we are proud of, one which survived food poisoning, blackouts, freighting hundreds of kilos of equipment across the world, and many other stories which will all be revealed in time. We are proud of it, and hope you will enjoy...

Cities

This project is somewhere in between a tribute to our own city and an experiment in sounds that we've found abroad.

The approach to this record was far less precious than it was for our debut and two shoes. It was a kind of surprise record we almost didn't expect to make. We wrote the material very quickly, and had an excellent and robust few weeks recording it.

The record is some ways serious and in some ways stupendous. There are ethnics, locals, sad songs, adventure songs, musical chorus', screamers, and a collection of soul references. There are strings sections, Sitars, Tablas, horn sections, short punchy arrangements as well as some excellent solos.

It is the kind of recording people might get to hear a different side of The Cat Empire, but it's still soulful, strange, humorous, whimsical, sometimes sad, sometimes delirious, mis-placed and undoubtedly Catempiracle as well.

Mariah Carey to Release Two Albums in 2007

Universal Music Group Chief Executive Doug Morris said on Tuesday the world's largest music company will post its best ever revenue and profit in 2007 thanks to new releases from its top-selling artists.

Morris said Universal and other music companies are also starting to see new revenue streams from digital sources, including Apple's iTunes online music service and iPod digital media player, and mobile phone ringtones.

"I think that next year we're going to have our best year," he said at the Reuters Media Summit in New York. "I think our revenues and our profits will be the best we've ever had."

Morris said Universal Music, owned by French media giant Vivendi (VIV.PA: Quote, Profile, Research), will benefit hugely from new albums from Eminem, 50 Cent and two albums from Mariah Carey.

"You can see there are myriad streams of income starting to come into the record companies," said Morris. "We're going to make money from MySpace, we're going to make money from YouTube, we're going to make money from Zune...we will make tremendous amount of money from telephones."

Carey launches a summer tour (Sean Paul will open shows for her)

Hot again, Carey launches a summer tour
By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY

Now that Mimi has gotten her act together, she's taking it on the road. Having re-established herself at the top of the pop heap last year with her six-times-platinum The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey is launching her first U.S. tour since 2003.

Called The Adventures of Mimi, it will kick off Aug. 5 in Miami and take the star to more than 30 cities. (Sean Paul will open a number of shows.)

"I've always associated going to a show with summer, and the sense of freedom that evokes," Carey says. "Summertime is the best time for tours, I think. Not that I'm the queen of touring."

The singer has indeed hardly been a constant fixture on the concert circuit. She says, "I need a day and a half of complete vocal rest between shows," which makes tour logistics tricky.

Before recording Emancipation, Carey "was on tour for a while, taking two days off between shows, which left me in a great place vocally. And now, because I'm at a really good place in my life and career, I want to document it."

Carey will, in fact, be filming the journey, for which she'll even use a tour bus. "I had a small one in Europe, but I didn't sleep on it or anything. Someone, I won't say who, told me, 'The bathroom may be a little small for you.' "

Though she jokes about "my reputation as a diva," Carey is keen that her Adventures bring her closer to the audience.

"I know that my fans already understand who I am. Sometimes I think they get me more than I get myself. But I want everyone who sees these shows to get a better understanding of me, my personal side, by the time they leave."

To that end, the star will mix hits from Emancipation and previous albums with deeper cuts.

"There's a song Close My Eyes from Butterfly, and girls have told me that it helped save their lives after abusive childhoods and relationships. I want there to be intimate moments — not a woe-is-me thing, but a chance for people to recognize that we've all been through things, and we can connect through music."

She won't disappoint the faithful. "I know people want to hear certain songs, and would be disappointed if I sang, say, Vision of Love and didn't give it my all — no pun intended, because My All will also be on the set list."

And don't be surprised if some of Carey's hip-hop collaborators show up as special guests.

"It depends on who's in town and available, but there are artists I have enough of a relationship with — Jermaine Dupri, Busta Rhymes. When I'm in L.A., maybe Snoop will be around."

Thomas, Jewel Plan Tandem Tour

Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.

Atlantic labelmates Rob Thomas and Jewel will combine forces for a seven-week tour that will open May 23 in Clearwater, Fla. Making it an Atlantic roster hat trick, Toby Lightman will support the most dates on the tour, which is slated to close July 7 in Kelseyville, Calif.

The tour will play two nights at early stops in Anderson, S.C. (May 27-28), and Atlanta (May 28-29), with Jewel appearing only the first night and Thomas only the second. Also, Thomas will miss a May 30 show in Myrtle Beach, S.C., a June 8 show in Vienna, Va., and a June 16 Niagara Falls show, while Jewel will skip a May 27 date in Jacksonville, Fla., and the tour's final two shows in Murphy's, Calif.
